Children (aged from 7 to 12 years old) from very poor families, mostly from the Shanty Town, attend the classrooms in the Skills Centre each afternoon, after attending State School in the morning. The teachers give them help with their homework (there are no facilities at home) and they enjoy studying different themes and engaging in a different project each month. Occasional outings are arranged – and a week’s Summer Camp.
Most of the children have no breakfast, so they receive a prepacked snack of biscuits, yoghourt and fruit.
Kindergarten in Iasi
A free kindergarten, especially for children too poor to attend a State kindergarten, is held in the mornings. The children are taught acceptable social behaviour and prepared for primary school as well as having fun, drawing, singing, and learning Bible stories. These children also receive a midmorning snack - as above.
Village Community Centres
Small buildings in villages provide opportunities for Homework Clubs and Youth groups. Erbiceni has a daily Homework Club. Youth Groups and Bible Studies take place in a small centre in Slobozia, a remote gypsy village.
